Summer Bank Holidays 2026: UK Dates Guide

6 min read

The UK’s summer bank holiday is the one date that splits most sharply by nation — not by a few days, but by almost four weeks. Scotland takes it on Monday 3 August 2026; England, Wales and Northern Ireland wait until Monday 31 August.

The two dates

  • Scotland — Monday 3 August 2026, the first Monday of the month.
  • England, Wales and Northern Ireland — Monday 31 August 2026, the last Monday of the month.

If you work across the border, or have family split between Scotland and the rest of the UK, this is the one bank holiday genuinely worth double-checking each year, since it’s easy to assume the dates match when they’re weeks apart.

Why the gap exists

Scotland’s earlier date lines up with Scottish school terms, which typically finish for summer in late June and return in mid-August — noticeably earlier than the England-and-Wales school year. A first-Monday-in-August holiday sits naturally within that shorter Scottish summer break. England, Wales and Northern Ireland’s schools run later into July and don’t return until early September, so their equivalent holiday sits at the very end of the season instead, functioning more as a last hurrah before autumn.

What each date means for travel

Scotland’s 3 August holiday tends to coincide with the run-up to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is typically in full swing by early August, making Edinburgh notably busier than usual that weekend. England, Wales and Northern Ireland’s 31 August holiday falls on the same weekend as Notting Hill Carnival in London, one of the largest street festivals in Europe, and also marks the unofficial final weekend of the school summer holidays — both factors that push domestic travel and accommodation prices up.

Practical notes

Both dates are fixed by their “first/last Monday” rule rather than a specific calendar date, so they move slightly year to year but stay predictable. Neither requires a substitute day in 2026, since both already fall on Mondays.
